There’s a misconception out there that younger workers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are more proficient with their technology compared to other generations. While they might have grown up using it, this experience doesn’t necessarily translate to proficiency. Assuming any one age group is more aware of cybersecurity is perhaps one of the most costly assumptions you can make.

Sure, younger generations grew up with technology, but does that make them better at identifying scams?
The consensus seems to be “No.” Gen Z and millennials might even fall for online scams at a higher rate than older folks. The reason: older generations often approach technology with a degree of healthy skepticism and caution. Compare this to the younger workers, driven by speed and high-velocity digital habits, and you have a recipe for disaster waiting to happen.
They will be more likely to fall for scams, especially the advanced threats driven by AI that are increasingly more difficult to spot.
A generation raised with smartphones is highly fluent in consumer software applications, but they have largely been insulated from how enterprise technology actually works.
For someone who grew up with modern web apps, technology is amazing. You click a button or tap an icon, and information appears. Many have never used or managed a local file directory, configured a network, or considered where data is stored physically.
Since they don’t understand how the underlying infrastructure works, they are more at risk of threats that claim to “close” that gap, such as phony productivity plugins or skirting the VPN connection while out of the office.
You might assume that a younger workforce will understand operational safety principles like password management and data segmentation, but this is simply not the case.
In reality, younger demographics are statistically more likely to reuse passwords across personal and professional accounts. An employee might use the same password for their personal Netflix, their online banking, and their corporate CRM. If their Netflix credentials are leaked in a minor third-party data breach, an automated hacker bot could try to use those same credentials on your company network.
This kind of behavior bypasses your firewall entirely and signals a massive need for more advanced solutions, both technical and behavioral.
While your team might be “good at tech,” they still prize one metric above all else: speed. They want their experience to be frictionless, and if they can accomplish that by compromising security, that’s a sacrifice they are willing to make—whether it’s intentional or not.
